Bun&Bunee is proud to be official sponsors of One Love Central! When we met up with Quincy Moyo and Charles Lamprecht, the founders earlier this year, we discussed their dreams and visions for South Africa’s skate community and how we could possibly assist them.
One Love Central has a new Skate Academy at the Drill Hall which is situated in Johannesburg’s inner-city. Bun&Bunee was able to donate 10 full skateboard completes and accessories to their cause. Shortly after the donation a workshop took place, and kids from different backgrounds got together to be taught the basics of skateboarding, as well as the skateboard assembly process.
The skateboards are now available for the kids to use during the day, but they stay at the academy for the programme. Therefore, they can be used by many kids on an ongoing basis.
In addition, Bun&Bunee donated 5 complete longboards and will also be donating two rails that will help young skaters advance their skills further while having more fun.
On a recent Saturday, the programme commenced with the first board and ramp assembly clinics. A mini ramp was donated by Skateistan Communications Director Brandon Gomez, and the first step was reassembling the 3m wide structure in its new home. A ramp like this is valuable in teaching young skateboarders basic board control but also in providing a facility that can lead to exponential growth in confidence over time. The skateboard assembly clinic taught kids about the fundamental components of a skateboard. By building their own boards up from individual parts, the kids could learn about the important significance of each piece.
The large open square at the Drill Hall also houses a basic skatepark setup with everything from quarter pipes and kickers to rails and grind boxes. The guys have accumulated bits and pieces of the setup over time and even made some themselves during DIY projects. It’s a prime location for the skate clinic, where kids have the space to participate in a safe environment, under the guidance of clinic co-ordinators. The guys from One Love are looking to expand their operation further into the inner-city area and have targeted a new skatepark development in Hillbrow as a possible location to reach more kids.
One Love Central is all about sustainably growing skateboarding at a grass roots level in Johannesburg and so is Bun&Bunee. We are super excited about supporting Quincy and Charles, and will keep you posted on further developments. Bun&Bunee is committed to the growth of the local skate industry, and will continue to support One Love Central .Together we are making things happen in our community.
